On the 19th of November, Toyo Keizai covered Career University in a feature article which can be read here (in Japanese).
According to the author, Yohei Tsunemi, who is a professor at the Chiba University of Commerce, he first suspected that Career University was just a front for companies to “harvest early” (ie. hire future employees at an early stage). After tailing the Summer session of Career University at Mitsui & Co. he changed his mind and was “extremely impressed” by the program.
Tsunemi later interviewed, Masaru Matsumoto, the chairman of both Career University as well as the wider VISITS group. In the interview, Masaru stressed that they make it clear to both students and companies that Career University is not a platform for companies to hire students. Instead, it is meant as a location where students can gain a short and concentrated experience at a company – for the students, they get to know how both the company and industry work and for the companies, it is a good opportunity to show off the lesser publicized aspects of the internal workings of their company.
In conclusion, Tsunemi noted the potential for Career University to cause a large social impact, in particular as noted by the article’s subtitle – in “equipping youth that will not be defeated by artificial intelligence”.
